It was released through Interscope Records on September 27, as the lead single from the soundtrack to the musical romantic drama film, A Star Is Born. The song is heard three times throughout the film, most prominently during a sequence when Cooper's character Jackson Maine invites Gaga's character Ally to perform it onstage with him. Gaga wrote it from Ally's point of view with the self-aware lyrics asking each other if they are content being who they are. A rock power ballad , the song finds Gaga and Cooper trading verses and gradually moves toward the climactic final chorus with a vocal run by Gaga. The recording is interspersed with the sound of audience noise and applause. An accompanying music video was also released, showing both Gaga and Cooper's characters singing "Shallow" together onstage, interspersed with scenes from A Star Is Born. Commercially, the song topped the charts in more than twenty countries and reached the top ten elsewhere. Gaga collaborated with Mark Ronson , with whom she had produced her fifth studio album, Joanne , to develop the soundtrack for this version of the film A Star Is Born.
Played by Lady Gaga, Ally is close to giving up on her dream of making it as a musician, but Jackson soon coaxes her on stage and helps her to find fame. The tragic storyline for A Star Is Born certainly strikes a chord, but the music from the film is equally evocative. Often catchy and undeniably moving, the minute soundtrack is a fusion of country, pop and blues rock, with heartfelt lyrics to match.
